Cholesterol, a fatty substance within the human body, is essential for the body to function properly. The body uses cholesterol to produce various hormones that are essential in the digestion of fat. However, large quantities of cholesterol in the blood can cause the walls of arteries to shrink; which, in turn, hinders the normal flow of blood through the arteries.

It is unfortunate that, in most cases, there are no symptoms of high cholesterol. Typically, it cannot be detected until people have a blood test done. In a small number of cases however, some patients do show some symptoms. These symptoms include such things as chest pain, sweating, weakness, palpitations, nausea and pain in the jaw, neck or arms. All of these symptoms are indications that the heart is not getting enough blood. When cholesterol becomes extremely high, it can fully block blood flow to the heart; and the person can have a stroke or a heart attack.

Since there are no symptoms in most cases of high cholesterol, the best thing that people can do is to have their doctors check them regularly for the disease. People, who are particularly at high-risk for this disease, are overweight persons, people who have a family history of the disease, and people who have a family history of heart attacks. People who lead sedentary lifestyles, and people who consume a large amount of foods high in saturated fats are also prone to high cholesterol.

Studies have shown that age is a factor in high cholesterol, as well. When women go through menopause, their cholesterol levels tend to rise, and their levels have been found to be higher than men of the same age group. Another reason, that cholesterol tends to rise with age, is that as people get older, many of them become more sedentary than they were when they were younger.

Although one or two Alcoholic Beverages can help to lower cholesterol, more than two can raise cholesterol levels. Stress is yet another precipitating factor in high cholesterol, as stress is one of the leading causes of high-blood pressure. Studies show that people under extreme stress have much higher cholesterol levels than individuals who are not under any stress.

In conclusion, in many cases, there are no visible signs of high cholesterol. However, people can reduce their chances of getting the disease by eating healthy food, exercising and trying to remain stress-free. If people are overweight, have sedentary lifestyles, drink heavily, are under a lot of stress, or have a family history of high cholesterol and/or heart attacks; they should have their doctors test them regularly for the disease.

Some factors you can control include maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, exercising and eating a healthy, varied diet.
