The United States government relies upon several different federal organizations in order to function correctly. While this multitude of different agencies helps America’s government to provide smooth administration to the country, such a large amount of organizations requires extensive maintenance and overseeing. This is where the federal GSA (General Services Administration) comes in. The GSA takes care of the business aspects of the United States’ numerous agencies. For instance, the GSA is responsible for supplying the organizations with their necessary goods, managing their employees and office spaces, and providing their facilities with technological and communication equipment. By taking care of the government’s business aspects, these agencies are able to focus their efforts more strongly on the efficient operation of the United States government.

The federal GSA has several tasks that it must take care of. One of the services that is offered through the GSA is the GSA Schedule. Because the federal GSA is responsible for providing government agencies with supplies, they play a large role in nationwide commerce. A GSA Schedule is in essence a contract between a government agency and a vendor with whom the government does frequent business. The contract locks in a certain pricing for a given amount of time (normally five years) in which the government agrees to purchase its goods solely from this vendor. A proposed schedule is usually submitted to multiple vendors, and the GSA then chooses the most attractive offer from these prospective sellers. This allows the government to procure an inexpensive price on the supplies that its agencies need, while the vendors are provided with a steady and reliable source of income. The GSA Schedule process is a very efficient procedure which benefits United States organizations.

The Public Building Service is another facet of the federal GSA. This program facilitates the building of many new federal structures, and the GSA manages and oversees the program’s actions. Receiving funding primarily from tax payer dollars and the Federal Building Fund (which is supplied by rent from the federal agencies that utilize buildings owned by the government), the Public Building Service enables buildings to be constructed for the use of various government agencies. This program is also notable for its strong emphasis on using environmentally friendly materials, designs, and building processes in its construction procedures. In fact, the Public Building service is reputed as one of the largest constructors of ’green’ buildings in the entire country.
