One of the most important things that high school students think about is how to pay for college. If scholarships are not an option, FAFSA may be the answer. This is a government approved program that any student can apply for. There are no age limits and you can be in any income bracket to apply. This does not mean that you will be approved for every grant or loan that the government has available. There are only certain amounts of grants that FAFSA can award to students. The best thing to do is start early so you can find out if you will have the government assistance.

There are deadlines set by each school as to when you need to apply for FAFSA. These deadlines are normally before the start of the fall semester so that the grant, if approved, can be applied to the full school year. When students apply to a college, they will be given the forms to complete for the FAFSA application. This application can be completed online. The benefit of completing the application online is that the department of education will receive the application faster than if it were mailed. All information must be completed as accurately as possible.

All income must be reported. Students who live with their parents must report the income their parents receive. If they are of an age where they can support themselves, they may be exempt from this rule. Single parents almost always automatically qualify for government grants to help with school costs. Women receive help more in this area as well. After the forms are completed, they must be mailed to the address listed on the application. The student should not take them back to the school. A letter will be sent to the school and the student notifying them of the decision made by FAFSA. If the student has been approved for the grant, they can begin using the money as soon as they know when they can get their books and pay their tuition. The grants do not have to be paid back to FAFSA.
