Bunk beds are cool. It’s a simple fact. All kids like the idea of having bunk beds. Some don’t get over it until the leave college. Most adult males secretly like the idea of having a bunk bed. Bunk beds are not only cool, they are efficient and space saving. It may take some time to wade through all the bunk bed options available these days, but if a person is shopping for themselves or someone they love, it will be time well spent.

Bunk beds

The classic bunk bed is simply two twin beds stationed one on top of the other with a ladder to climb up to the upper bed. These days there are more options available. The twin-over-full is, as the name implies, a twin bunk bed mounted over a full size bed, providing more space for a larger child to sleep comfortably. Many companies now offer a twin-over-futon bunk bed which is a great way to have a sofa in a confined space with the added bonus of an extra bed for when cousins come to visit. Variations of the traditional bunk bed include “L” and “T” shaped layouts. While not as space saving as the standard model they typically offer increased storage, and in many cases, a small desk for study or computer use.

Lofts

A loft is essentially a bunk bed minus the bottom bunk. An elevated platform provides a raised sleeping area while the space below can be used for a variety of purposes. Favorite amongst college kids packed into small dorm rooms, small sofas or loveseats, bean bags, futons, or simply a large array of pillows can be arranged underneath the sleeping platform. Desks are another popular option with lots of places for extra storage.

Wood or Metal

Many choices and styles exist for both bunk beds and lofts. One of the most difficult choices may be choosing between wood or metal. Although heavy, metal bunk beds are often lighter than their wooden counterparts, some by 75 pounds or more. While wood is thought of as warmer and metal as typically colder in appearance, the cost savings are something to consider as well – metal bunk beds are often cheaper. Properly cared for, they may last longer than wooden ones, as well as being mold and fire resistant.

There are many options available in the bunk bed world. Prospective shoppers shouldn’t be daunted by this fact. No matter the choice the make, the person it is bought for will be much happier simply because it is a bunk bed.
