If you are looking to advance your career, becoming a certified nursing assistant, or CNA, may be the way to do it. A CNA makes more money than an average worker and without much extra training. There are, however, a few things to consider when thinking about becoming a CNA.

1. A certified nurse assistant is just that - an assistant. CNAs generally get stuck doing work that nurses don’t want to do. Tasks often done by CNAs include grooming, bathing, feeding, changing adult diapers, and many more tasks. These tasks are often messy, smelly, and thankless.

2. A CNA job can often be very taxing on one’s body. Many patients cannot lift themselves up, and will need a CNA’s help to stand and walk. If a patient falls to the floor and can’t get up, a CNA is usually one of the people who help them up. If a patient needs to be moved and cannot walk, a CNA will help move the patient. Patients can be obese, and this can of lifting can be very hard the back and knees of a CNA.

3. Most CNAs are employed in nursing homes. This is becoming truer as the baby boomer’s generation is aging. More and more elderly require physical assistants with day to day tasks. Because of the natural cycle of life, there will be a lot of death experienced with a job like this. A CNA may get to know a patient very well and have to watch that person die. It can be a very depressing job.

4. Many facilities are not up to par. As a CNA, you make work at a place where the patients are not treated as they should be. You may feel powerless and unable to make a difference in a facility like this. There are many times when you may go home and think there is no way you can make a difference when the whole facility is being treated so poorly.

Although being a CNA can seem very demeaning and pointless at times, there will be many clients that will realize how much they need a CNA and how much that CNA helps them. At times like that, you will realize that being a CNA is worth all of the gruesome things you have to go through.
