We remember when we were kids, family car trips were ones filled with dad singing to the radio, your sister poking your arm, or maybe just plain boredom. Today, kids have Gameboys and movies to keep them distracted, but sometimes, those distractions are just not enough for the cross-country trip in a small minivan. If you are going to need something to keep your kids from asking you every five minutes if you are there yet, you best bring some good old fashion car games for kids.

The License Plate game is one of the classic games for kids. Print out a map of the United States and see if you can find all 50 states on your road trip. It could be fun to write the date and time you saw the plate or make it a competition to see who can spot them all first!

Another great game for kids with license plates is looking the letters and attempting to come up with different phrases using the letters. For example, GBF could be “great balls of fire” or “good bubbles float.”

A scavenger hunt is also a great way to pass the time. Create a list before your trip and let the kids see how many things they can find. A spin on this game is to do an Alphabet Scavenger Hunt. Look for the letters of the alphabet on trucks and signs. First one to Z wins the game!

Find 100 is a cool game that can be quite competitive! Pick an object and race to see who can find a hundred of their object first. For example, find 100 red cars before the other player finds 100 big rigs.

Twenty Questions is a classic, but great game for kids. Pick a “Person, Place, or Thing: and see if the kids can guess the object by asking yes or no questions. If they can do it in less than twenty questions, they win.

Lastly Fortunately-Unfortunately is a funny game that gets the creative juices flowing. One person says “Unfortunately, there is a bug on my head” and the other says, “Fortunately, I brought a net to catch it,” and so on. It is so much fun to see what your kids will come up with!

What ever the trip, or however long, as long as you have a few games for kids up your sleeve, your trip can be whining free and enjoyable. A lot of people create “trip bags,” filled with things to keep kids occupied and any supplies these games might need.
