Welding is a profession that can be found in every industry. Construction of buildings, roads and bridges all require the skills of a welder. Equipment, car, and machinery manufacturing all need welders to complete their products. The list for positions available to a trained welder is almost endless. Training in the welding profession can provide you with the ability to find long-term, high-paying employment.

Types Of Welding Programs

Most welding programs are conducted through a technical college or trade school. Some major universities may provide advanced welding degrees or specialty training, but this will depend on the location of the university. Universities that are located in high-manufacturing areas often provide this degree, while others do not.

General welding school will take the student approximately a year to complete. During this year, students will learn about different metals and the different processes needed to bind these metals through welding. Students will be given sample metals to weld, learn different positions of welding, such as Vertical Up, and learn how to finish the weld once it is completed. In addition to the metal working skills that are taught, students will also learn how to read and interpret blueprints. Understanding welding symbols on a blueprint is imperative to the job.

At the end of the schooling, students will take a certification test for different types of welding and positions. This certification will allow them to enter into the workforce as a skilled worker, earning a higher pay than welders who have not been formally trained.

Specialty Welding Programs

For welders that already hold a certification and welding certificate, there are also advanced classes that can be taken to further and enhance their careers. Certified Welding Inspectors and specialty welding, such as Underwater Welding, are in high demand. Welding inspectors are often hired into the Quality Control department of manufacturing companies to inspect and approve of the welding being performed on their manufacturing floor.
