Georgetown, the capital and largest city in Guyana, was named for King George III. Georgetown has been nicknamed the “Garden city of the Caribbean.” The influences of the Dutch, French, and British can still be seen in many of the architectural structures.

When visiting this picturesque capital city, there are many places of interest to see. There is the St. George’s Cathedral which has been considered the tallest wooden structure in the world. It stands at 143 feet tall and has been designated a national monument. Another attraction is the Umana Yana which means the “Meeting place of the people” and was built by the Wai-Wai Amerindians. It is 55 feet tall and is made from thatched palm leaves, wallaba posts tied together with assorted vines. No nails were used in its construction and it’s cone-shaped.

If you are looking to visit a city that still values and preserves its natural beauty, visit the wonderful capital city of Georgetown, Guyana.
