Witches are one of the most popular and classic Halloween characters, largely because Halloween is directly related to witchcraft. It is also because popular culture has provided society with an onslaught of popular witch characters for countless years. From witches in folklore to witches on film, there are a myriad of witches, both good and evil, from which Halloween revelers can choose.

Good Halloween Witches

For good Halloween witches, one need look no further than the Harry Potter series. Older women may choose witches such as Molly Weasley, Minerva McGonagall, and Tonks. Young women and girls have a slew of choices, such as Luna Lovegood, Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley.

Good Halloween witches outside of the Harry Potter series are easy to find as well. There is Glinda from "The Wizard of Oz." There is also Wendy from Casper, for little girls. Then, there is the ambiguous witch Elphaba from the novel "Wicked." She is technically the Wicked Witch of the West, but reading "Wicked" gives you the sense that she was actually a good witch. Elphaba is more for adults, but children can paint their faces green like Elphaba.

Bad Halloween Witches

Bad witches to dress up as for Halloween include fictional and pseudo non-fictional characters. Fictional bad witches include the witches from "Hocus Pocus." There are the square-shoed witches from "The Witches." Of course, there are also the bad witches from Harry Potter, the most sinister of which being Bellatrix LeStrange.

Real bad witches are likely non-existent, but there are some characters that stem from real life dramas and folklore who, despite the probability that they are not witches, were labeled as witches. These include the Salem witches, costumes of which only require colonial garb, the Bell Witch and Bloody Mary, who are ghost witches, so one can be creative with costumes depicting these witches of folklore.

If a woman or girl decides that no witch appeals to her Halloween costume idea, she can just wear witchy clothing. A pointy hat, a broom and a cloak go a long way to making a person a Halloween witch. Even just a simple wand will suffice for those averse to costume clothing.
