Hearing Impairment
Auditory imperception refers to difficulties in perceiving or processing auditory information, such as sounds or speech. It can manifest as problems with hearing, speech recognition, or understanding spoken language. This condition may be associated with hearing loss, cognitive impairment, or neurological disorders.
Prime Minister Chretien suffered an attack of Bell's palsy in his youth, leaving the left side of his face permanently paralyzed. He also has a hearing impairment and is slightly dyslexic.
Neural hearing impairment refers to a type of hearing loss that occurs due to damage or dysfunction in the auditory nerve or the central auditory pathways in the brain. Unlike conductive or sensorineural hearing loss, which primarily affects the outer or inner ear, neural hearing impairment involves issues with how sound signals are processed and transmitted to the brain. This condition can result in difficulties with sound clarity and understanding speech, even when hearing thresholds are normal. It may be associated with various conditions, including auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD).
Postlingual hearing impairment refers to hearing loss that occurred after language was developed. This is especially important in children during their formative years when their speech and language skills are developing. The basic building blocks for learning, reading, spelling are borne from good listening, auditory memory, and auditory discrimination and if there is hearing loss the old adage - junk in, junk out - prevails. The methods to teach the postlingually deaf are much different than the methods to teach the prelingually deaf. Postlingual hearing loss is also more common and the listener often does not notice the loss as much as those around him or her.

Sensory impairments refer to difficulties in processing sensory information, such as sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. The four main types of sensory impairments are visual impairment, hearing impairment, tactile impairment (problems with touch), and olfactory impairment (loss of sense of smell).

Hearing impairment can be determined in an infant by doing early screening and diagnosis after birth. Screening can be done with 1 or 2 tests. Both measure how a baby respond to sound and it takes 5 - 10 min and is also painless. Hearing impairment can only be diagnosed by specialist.
