Maybe you have recently decided to become a forklift operator as a career choice. You may have also recently made a forklift rental. Either way, one thing you certainly want to know how to do is change the oil in a forklift.

The first thing you need to do is retrieve a pan. Slide it under the forklift so you can use it to catch any oil that may drip out from under the forklift.

The next thing you’ll want to do is start the forklift and run the engine for a while. Run it until you can get the oil very warm. This will help make draining the oil much easier.

Now retrieve a wrench and use it to unscrew the drain plug. A good deal of oil will come out into the pan. It should be about four quarts, which is standard for most forklifts.

After the oil has completely finished draining, you should examine the plug sealing washer. Check it for damage. If it’s damaged in any way, the smart thing to do would be to replace it. Now use the wrench to screw the drain plug back in.

Now take the pan and slide it so it’s underneath the oil filter. Retrieve your new oil filter. Don’t forget to spread some oil over the oil filter’s rubber seal. Now take your wrench and screw on the new filter, replacing the old one. Make sure not to screw it in too tightly.

The next step is to simply refill the oil. Again, typically this will be about four quarts of oil. Also make sure to discard your old oil in a way in line with the laws of your community.

Now all you have to do is restart your forklift, and it should run perfectly. However, you should check back about sixty minutes later to make sure there is no oil leakage under your forklift.

With these simple steps, changing the oil in a forklift is quite simple. If you had to perform an oil change on a rental, make sure the rental agency properly reimburses you for all your expenses related to performing the oil change.
