One pup is usually born in summer and are born with their eyes open and able to call and move well. The sea lion mothers have to forage for food to maintain their own energy and so will leave the pups on their own for short periods whilst they go out to sea. The female sea lion will return and allow the pups to suckle. As the pups grow and become more independent, the females will spend longer and longer out to sea. The mother will nurse her sea lion pup for about 1 year.
