When you install programs, Windows creates temprary files to help with the installation. These files are onlyneeded during the installation process, and most programs remove them from the computer once the program has finished installing. However - some leave them on the disk - which takes up space. Additionally, when you remove a program, some files (such as saved game data etc) can be left behind on the disk (which takes up usable space) When you run a disc-clean program - it searches the disk for any files that are not needed by any current program, and removes them - freeing up the space they occupied.
