Someone once said, “If you build a better mousetrap, people will beat a path to your door”. Proverbially speaking, that is absolutely true. The current problem is application. What does that proverb mean in a modern society? Everything! Understanding this old idiom will actually lead anyone down the path to success as any great leader and innovator will tell you. The trick is understanding the mousetrap, what it is and what to do about it.
Step1: The mousetrap. What is the mousetrap? The mousetrap is anything and everything that people need, use, desire, want, buy, download, dream about and… well, you get the message.
Step 2: The problem. Generally speaking, people don’t have the drive, energy, or resources to generate their own goods and provide their own services on a macro level. It’s not that they are lazy, for the most part. It’s mostly because society has been trained to work for money in a system that owns their time and afterward they have the capital to purchase what they need, desire, etc. The drive to create has been driven out of people in general. Most people, because of this, will never achieve greatness in their lifetimes. They will do a great deal of work and most of their time will be wasted watching television and sleeping.
Step 3: The solution. It’s very personal. You have to separate yourself emotionally from the status quo. Most successful people have little or no time to watch television. They are the creators. The innovators. The leaders. They watch what the others are buying. They observe the trends and stay one step ahead. They see the mousetrap you need and provide it for you at confiscatory rates. Sometimes they even convince you of the sort of mousetrap you need, even though it is simply an illusion.
Step 4: Your role, too, is very personal. Pick something you can see yourself doing for the rest of your life and become the best in the world at it. There are literally millions of comedians in the world and yet only one of them made eighty four million dollars last year. There are millions of artists in the world, but how many can you name of the top of your head? Their work is worth millions today. Being the best at something means you have built a better mousetrap and people will beat a path to your door.
Money isn’t everything. You only get one life to live, however, and making it great is what really counts. There’s an old saying, “some people complain about the coming storm when others learn how to dance in the rain”. And yet there are others who are dreaming about finally building that ultimate mousetrap which will control the weather, move the rain, and feed the world. Now that’s a mousetrap.
