Replacing the spark plugs in an automobile is a vital component of maintenance. It is a tedious task, but it is also a simple one, and in this current economic climate, many of us are looking for ways to save money. Here’s an overview of changing the spark plugs in your car.
1. Allot yourself 15 minutes per plug, but expect to take twice as long your first time out. If the car had been running, remember to wait 4 hours prior to changing the spark plugs.
2. Use the manual to locate your spark plugs, recognize how many you have, note the socket size, and note the gap, if applicable. Not all modern spark plugs require gapping.
3. Bring that information along with the make, model, and year to the local auto parts store. Remember to buy any necessary accessories: socket wrench, spark plug socket, socket extension, gap tool, etc.
4. Park the car in a convenient, covered location. Spark plugs get very hot very fast so be sure to wait the appropriate amount of time. Then, gather all of the tools and materials for convenience.
5. Locate the spark plugs and wires, and use masking tape to mark where the wires connect. Do not attempt to do this relying on memory.
6. Remove each spark plug by pulling on the caps so as not to break the spark plug wires. Don’t be afraid to apply some force to the caps. They usually require forceful twisting and pulling to come free.
7. Clean the entire area thoroughly. You can use a brush, but for best effect use an air compressor. It is quicker this way, and it does a much better job then you will by hand.
8. Use the wire-gauge gap tool to set the appropriate gap on each of the new spark plugs, if necessary. The gap is the space between the two electrodes jutting out from the spark plug.
9. Replace each spark plug by hand, finger tighten them, and then give it a 1/16 turn with the socket. Be very careful not to over-tighten them.
10. Use the masking tape as a guide to reconnect the wires to the spark plug. Remove and discard the tape as you do so.
That’s all there is to it, and it is as easy as it sounds. As mentioned earlier, it is tedious, but once you get fast at it, it’s a good way along with doing your own oil change to save some money.
