There are three ways to become a radiology technician. One is to acquire experience with radiology in a related role, such as nursing, and to obtain certification as a radiology technician after working in the health care industry. Another path is to acquire an educational degree in radiology, such as a two- or four-year degree, and then enter the health care industry without a radiology certification. Finally, prospective radiology technicians may earn a degree in radiology, obtain their radiology certification, and then enter the health care workforce. Generally, most positions require a minimum of two years of training.

A radiology technician, not to be confused with a radiologic technologist, is a vocational worker who conducts computed tomography (CT) scans, X-rays, and mammograms. Radiology technicians, sometimes called radiographers, are employed in hospitals, private doctor’s offices, and other health care facilities.

Persons interested in becoming a radiology technician can expect to be in school between one and four years. Students may enroll in a curriculum that allows them to earn an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or a certificate.

Individuals who lack any experience in a medical field should consider a two-year associate’s program to obtain an entry-level position as a radiology technician. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees will enhance an applicant’s prospects for obtaining more lucrative management positions. Certificate programs will usually omit the introductory courses on basic medical terminology and practices; instead, these programs will focus mostly on teaching a student a working knowledge of radiology technology.

Radiology technician programs will teach students the terminology of radiology, how to interact with patients, and how to maintain patient records. In addition, students will acquire practical experience with setting up and operating radiology equipment, such as mammography machines, X-ray machines, and CT scanning machines.

Among the factors students should consider before committing to a radiology technician program are accreditation and partnerships. Students should consult the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) before applying to a radiology technician program. JRCERT is the only organization that accredits radiography and radiation therapy programs. In addition, students should select a school that has a partnership with a health care facility where students can observe radiology technicians at work.
