An air compressor is a device that takes breathable air and compresses it into a gas at much higher pressure than everyday air. Air compressors are used for purposes such as inflating tires and providing power for hand tools like drills, spray guns and nail guns. Air-powered tools are environmentally friendly and do not have as many moving parts as electrical tools. Not all tools are made for all kinds of air compressors, however. Here are the steps to take when choosing the right air compressor for an at-home workshop.

1) Check the ratings on each of the tools before going shopping. Tools that are air-powered have ratings that are expressed in terms of pounds per square inch, or PSI. Most air-powered tools have ratings of at least ninety PSI. If the inventory contains tools that have higher PSI ratings, get an air compressor with higher PSI ratings so it can accommodate them.

2) A good air compressor will deliver three or four cubic feet of air per minute at ninety PSI. For the purposes of measuring cubic feet, ninety PSI is counted as a single unit, so three to four cubic feet per minute is measured as per ninety PSI, as well. The cubic feet per minute, or CFM, measures the amount of air moving through the compressor. If more than one tool will be run from the same compressor simultaneously, get a compressor with higher CFM.

3) Take the horsepower, or HP, of the machine into consideration when deciding on a purchase. HP is rated on two different levels, the amount of energy needed to start the compressor and the amount needed to run it after it is started. A rating of five HP is sufficient to power most tools.

4) If the tools will run continuously, find a compressor with a large motor and a small air tank. Intermittently-used tools run better on large tanks, with thirty gallons of air or more. Smaller tanks work better with bigger motors.

5) Finally, think about the size of the compressor that is needed. A large compressor is bulky and cannot be moved around easily. Smaller compressors are easily moved, but they do not have as much power as large ones.
