Phlebology is a medical field dedicated to the treatment of vein diseases. Conditions like varicose veins at one point were usually treated by dermatologists, but now these conditions are primarily treated by phlebologists. In the United States, this is a newer designation in the field of medicine. Find out if you should become a doctor of phlebology and enter this growing profession.
First, you need to find out if you are suited for the medical field at all. Medical professionals need to be very scientific and precise, undergo many years of training and in many cases go deep into debt to finance it, pass many rigorous examinations, and maintain excellent ethical standards of conduct once they begin to practice. Only after becoming confident that the medical field is for you can you determine if phlebology is the right specialty for you to choose.
Next, you need to find out how comfortable you are with blood. Most people who go into medicine need to be okay with dealing with blood and other bodily fluids, but phlebologists especially need to be able to handle the sight of blood because of their specialty.
Make sure you are comfortable handling cosmetic issues. As a doctor of phlebology, it is likely you will see a lot of patients who have problems with varicose veins. There is some evidence that varicose veins left untreated can lead to strokes or blood clots, though in some circles this is debated. The work of a phlebologist can be seen as both cosmetic and as preventative treatment to make sure the circulatory system is functionally maximally. However, if you feel as though the work of a phlebologist is not serious enough, the field of phlebology is not for you.
Last, make sure you are aware of the amount of training you will need to become a doctor of phlebology. Phlebologists need to become licensed physicians first, and then undergo extensive post-graduate training including residency and internships. Some phlebologists have backgrounds in vascular surgery which facilitates their familiarity with the veins and circulatory system in general.
