Uh oh! It's 9 p.m. and everyone's gone to sleep--yet you haven't gotten in your daily workout. Working up a sweat with your latest Tae-Bo routine isn't likely to make your snoozing neighbors and family members happy with the racket though, so what now? If you're desperate to get a late night workout in but don't want to make too much noise, here's what to do: 1. Add some padding. Chances are no matter what you do--whether that's yoga or aerobics--will cause some noise, so to tone the noise level down, add some padding beneath you to muffle the sound. Here's what best for sound-proofing your workout:
A couple of blankets. While it's not the best defense against loud noise, laying a couple of well-insulated blankets on the ground helps cut down the noise of your feet stomping on the ground. If you have the money, place a soundproof pad on the ground instead. Normally made out of natural material, these pads are effective at absorbing noise caused by feet movement on the floor, making it ideal if you plan to do a serious workout. Add socks. If you're working on a hard wood surface, donning some socks can take the edge off your feet pounding and scraping across the floor, though it can't mask bigger sounds (such as jumping).
2. Choose a workout that won't make you airborne. While workouts such as Tae-Bo and Crossfit are guaranteed to work you into a sweat, they cause a lot of noise due to the constant movement of your feet--not a good thing if you want to keep quiet. To minimize the noise, go simple: Try working out by lifting weights, doing yoga, or enjoying a relaxing Pilates session after dark. You'll still get a good heart pump without disturbing your neighbors. 3. Take it outdoors. If the going really gets tough, exercising outdoors is a must for minimizing noise. Exercising outdoors can be dangerous, however, so make sure to keep these tips in check before going outside:
Wear reflective clothing. Even with street lights, it's not always easy to see people in the dark--especially for tired strangers behind the wheel. To keep safe, wear clothing with reflective material, which will alert others of your presence. Work out in familiar territory. Now's not the time to work out in the woods or a park you haven't been to before. It's not just a safety thing either--being unfamiliar with a new surrounding in the dark means a higher risk of injury. Carry protection. Working out alone at night makes you a prime target for criminals, so to stay safe, always carry protection. Your best bet: A small spray of mace, which instantly immobilizes unruly people with just one spray.
Remember, there's never an excuse for missing a workout--and with these tips, you'll never miss one either!
