Whether it’s for legal purposes or to simply find out who is the father of a child, paternity testing is the best way to handle it. It can create a bond between the father and child. It also can provide the child with a proper medical history of his parents, both mother and father. The legal part can include child support, social benefits, inheritance benefits, and social security or veteran’s benefits. The paternity testing can be done at an accredited laboratory which can be very expensive with costs being hundreds of dollars or more. The cost depends on where you live and what kind of testing is being done. The results usually only take up to five business days.

There are websites that offer DNA paternity testing for a very low cost, and promise very fast results. These tests are not always 100% correct and cannot always be counted on. The American Pregnancy Association only recommends the testing facilities that are accredited by the AABB, which was formerly the American Association of Blood Banks. It may cost more, but the tests that are done are either postnatal, or prenatal. The results are reliable.

The postnatal testing involves collection of blood and testing, a cheek swab and testing, umbilical cord collection and testing, and other samples such as tissue, hair or semen for testing.

The are two different prenatal paternity testing procedures that can be done. One is the CVS, Chorionic Villus Sampling. This is a test when a doctor uses a tube or thin needle to insert through the vagina, then through the cervix to obtain chorionic villi. These are pieces of tissue that are attached to the uterus. This test is done during the 10th to the 13th weeks of pregnancy. Before going ahead with the test, the doctor’s consent is needed if the procedure is used for paternity testing.

The other prenatal paternity test is amniocentesis. This is done between the 14th to the 20th weeks of pregnancy. The doctors inserts a thin needle through the abdomen into the uterus. The small amount of amniotic fluid which is taken out is what is tested. Unfortunately, there are possible risks including miscarriage or harming the baby. There may also be vaginal bleeding, cramping or leadking of the amniotic fluid. The same doctor’s consent is also needed for this procedure.

Whichever way is decided to have paternity testing, it is still a good idea not only for the father and the mother, but mostly for the baby.
