Graduating from dental school can open up many career opportunities. Besides working as a dentist or orthodontist, dentistry students can obtain research positions, work in public health, or even teach. Admission to dental school is very competitive. In fact, since there are fewer dental schools than medical colleges nationwide, it can be even tougher to get into a dental program than into medical school. To gain admission, students need good grades, high test scores, and excellent letters of recommendation.

(1) Keep your grades up during your undergraduate years, especially in science and math courses. When dental schools evaluate applications for admission, they focus on the number and the level of the science courses taken, as well as the grades. Earning A’s and B’s in advanced chemistry, Biology, and physics courses will greatly improve your chances of admission.

(2) Study for the DAT -- Dental Admission Test. The DAT is a standardized exam that all dental school applicants must pass. The test measures scientific knowledge and spatial reasoning skill. It is a multiple choice, timed, closed book exam that takes several hours to finish. Many test prep companies publish DAT study guides with practice questions and sample tests. All prospective dental students should purchase one or two study guides, since higher scores mean higher chances of admission.

(3) Get to know your professors so that you can receive good letters of recommendation. Participate in class discussions and visit office hours so that your professors can learn more about you. If your college has a pre-dentistry or pre-med club, joining the association is a great way to make contacts with potential recommenders. If your teachers can attest to your scholarship and passion for dentistry, they can write you excellent letters of support for dental school.

(4) Research dental schools to find dentistry programs that are a good match for you. Dentistry is a wide field, and your chances of gaining admission will greatly improve if you apply to dental schools that suit your strengths and interests. Find out their admission rates, the average GPA and DAT scores of admitted students, and whether they have and specialty programs in your area of interest.

Can you get into dental school with 2 years in undergraduate school?

well from my understanding being a pre-dental student myself, is probably possible but you might lower your chances of getting into dental school. Most pre-dental students usually complete a bachelors degree. And since dental school is becoming more and more competitive, it would be wise to try and finish undergraduate studies with a B.A or B.S. Take something that intrigues you so you know you will put effort in the courses and get A's. Besides you are going to have to build a good GPA (3.4 and higher)

Will it help your chances of getting into a school by sending in college applications early?

Yes, sending in applications early will improve your chances of getting into a school. Nearly all schools can only accept so many student because of the size of the school and number of dorms. If you have the credentials that a school wants (a good SAT score, good grades, etc.) sending your application in early can ensure you a spot in that school. If that school already has all of the spots filled up and you apply late, your application can be declined even if you have good credentials.
