Anyone who lives in a temperate climate can attest to the necessity of having a powerful air conditioning unit installed in their homes. In the southern United States, it is practically unheard of to not have some type of air conditioner in the house, especially as temperatures can often times rise above one hundred degrees. While central air can be extremely expensive, it is often quite economical to run an air conditioner that fits in the window. Installing window units is quite easy as long as you have somewhat of an idea of what you are doing.

First, you’ll want to decide which room you are going to install the unit in. Running multiple units in a home can be expensive and usually makes use of quite a bit of electricity. This being said, try to pick the room that you feel you will spend the most time in or need the air conditioner the most. Most people install air conditioning units in their living rooms and occasionally in their bedrooms, as sleeping in a hot room can be extremely uncomfortable. Once you have chosen your room, be sure that there is space in the window for the unit to sit. Also, be sure that you have the right type of window for the air conditioner you purchase.

Installing the unit is often as simple as placing it between the base of the window and the bottom of the first pain. Open the window as much as possible and - while keeping a solid grasp on the unit - slowly close it until the unit fits snugly. If you are able to lock your window with the unit resting in it, be sure to do so. Most window units have two lengths of Accordion plastic that can reach out to block any excess air from either entering or leaving the room; be sure to open these as much as possible.

From here, all you must do is plug the unit in and turn it on. You will usually have to configure the unit before operating; follow the instructions that came with the air conditioner and you should have no trouble.
