Keeping your independence through assisted living may sound like a paradox, but may, indeed, be possible. An assisted living facility is not a nursing home, nor do its residents require the level of care provided there. If you need assistance with some of the functions of daily living, choosing life in an assisted living facility may allow you to retain more of your independence over a longer period of time than trying to remain at home.

Accepting some limited help may avoid a catastrophic loss of independence. An accident at home, a forgotten medication or the depression that can come from social isolation can result in a situation that may quickly escalate into the need for nursing home level care.

Once you have decided on assisted living, choose where you would like to live. There are facilities in communities across the country. Many people will choose to stay in the area where they have lived. Others may choose to be closer to family. Still others may decide on a location where they have always wanted to live.

Next, visit the assisted living facilities in the area. Evaluate each one as you would any living arrangement. Is it aesthetically pleasing to you? Is it clean and well maintained? Does it offer activities you would enjoy? Visit the dining room and ask for a sample menu. Would you enjoy eating there? Talk to some residents. Are they happy there? Is the staff friendly, well trained, and background checked?

Cost is an important consideration. Prices at assisted living facilities vary and generally reflect the cost of living of the locale.

Find out what is included in the monthly charge, and what services cost an additional fee. Most assisted living arrangements provide a room or suite, at least some meals, housekeeping, medication management, and socialization opportunities for the basic fee. Transportation and a variety of personal services may cost extra. Even if you will not be using a particular service immediately, you may need it later on.

Acknowledge your situation, accept what help you must, and retain as much of your independence as possible.

Moving on to Easier Living?

Change is often difficult. But, once the hurdle of adjustment has passed, most often we discover that change is good. This is especially true if you have the opportunity to make choices regarding the change. Making the move from complete independent living to senior assisted living can be a positive experience. It will be even more pleasant if you take time to explore your options before relocating. Finding the senior setting that is best for you is the key to making the transition more pleasant. If you are responsible for locating an assisted living apartment for a family member, keep in mind their lifestyle, their personality, personal needs, and medical needs when exploring options for them. Moving to a community of seniors provides an opportunity for socialization. When living alone, loneliness can become an issue. The inability to visit friends, attend social events, or even go shopping leaves a person with a lot of empty time at home. Assisted living facilities have community gathering rooms where residents can visit each other. There are always activities planned for them to enjoy and transportation is provided to special events. Some assisted living communities have apartments for couples or individuals who would like a divided living and sleeping area. If one spouse has taken on the responsibility of caring for their mate, a move to an assisted living apartment would provide them with some extra support and assistance with their loved one. Making the move to assisted living becomes an attractive option when the task of keeping house, meal preparation, and maintaining a yard becomes too overwhelming. The issue of one’s safety is also a major decision making factor. The building is secured at night. The bathrooms are designed with walk-in showers, grab bars, and other safety features. Assisted living apartments have someone available at all times to help with medical needs. They assume the responsibility of dispensing medication. You can also receive assistance with personal care if needed. The transition from independent living to assisted living requires an adjustment but overall, the benefits make the change worthwhile. You can enjoy easier living and find new friends in an attractive, well maintained environment.

All About Assisted Living Facilities?

As the aging process takes its toll, it can become necessary for many people to have help with many of the daily activities they could once accomplish themselves. However, these people want to remain as independent as possible, and do not require constant medical attention, like those who live in nursing homes. For these people, an assisted living facility may be the best choice. An assisted living facility does just what the name implies-it provides individuals with assistance for completing daily activities. These activities can range from medication dispersion to help with bathing and dressing. Most facilities of this type include meals, laundry service, and some degree of housekeeping for the residents. Assisted living facilities work to help a person remain as independent as possible while working to preserve the person’s dignity and sense of self worth. After a person decides that he or she would like to reside in an assisted living facility, an individualized care plan will be drawn up specifically for him or her. This plan will make sure that the resident receives the help he or she needs, while maintaining the lifestyle he or she is accustomed to. These facilities regularly evaluate their residents to adapt to the changing needs of the resident. The main advantage of an assisted living facility is that the cost is typically much less than that of a nursing home. This is mainly due to the fact that the residents do not require supervision twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The residents at this type of facility have limited needs, and therefore the facility does not have to employ as many people to help the residents. Although assisted living facilities do not have as many employees or cost as much as nursing homes, the residents still receive the same high quality of care. Another advantage to living in an assisted living facility as opposed to living independently is that the person will receive constant companionship. This can be important for someone who has little or no family in the area. Interacting with people on a daily basis helps to keep the mind sharp and can greatly improve an individual’s quality of life.

Types of Assisted Living Jobs?

Assisted living facilities offer a home to elderly and disabled adults who do not require the type of medical assistance that a nursing home offers. Assisted living facilities also provide a number of different jobs to qualified individuals.DirectorThe director of an assisted living facility is responsible for making sure that residents have the proper nutrition, activities and medical access. Directors also must maintain a clean atmosphere throughout their facility and deal with the staffing needs. For their hard work, the director of the facility can expect an average yearly salary of $46,000.Directors are not required to have medical degrees, but they must have a license from a Residential Care/Assisted Living program accredited by the National Association Board for Long Term Care Administrators.NursesNot every assisted living facility has a paid nurse on staff. The bulk of a nurse's job in these facilities involve providing medication to the residents. Nurses also monitor ongoing minor medical problems of the residents and oversee the rest of the staff when the director is not present. Both licensed practical nurses and registered nurses are employed by assisted living facilities and duties for both tend to be the same in assisted living facilities. Yearly salary ranges from $34,000 to $68,000, depending upon license, state of residence, and prior experience.Recreation JobsA major concern for assisted living facilities is keeping the older and disabled residents active. Recreational directors and therapists implement projects and tasks designed to keep the residents active physically, as well as emotionally, spiritually and intellectually. While recreational therapists typically have a bachelor's degree in recreational therapy, a recreational director holds similar responsibilities and requires a certification as Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. Depending on experience and education, recreational therapists and directors can make between $34,000 to $60,000.Other JobsAssisted living facilities employ a number of nursing assistants and therapy assistants to help their trained medical staff. Facilities also employ janitorial, cooking and maintenance staff. Traditionally, these workers make less than nurses or therapists. Expected salaries range from an hourly wage of $8 to $15 and may be part-time.
