When your favorite t-shirt gets too old and worn-looking to be wearable but you’re not willing to throw it away, consider turning it into a throw pillow instead. This easy project is a great way to hang onto memorabilia t-shirts. It can also be a comforting transition for a child who’s outgrown her favorite shirt.
Step 1: Buy a pillow form or cotton batting. You may want to take the t-shirt with you to the store so you don’t accidentally buy a pillow form that’s bigger than the surface area of your shirt. For a small pillow, such as you would make from a child’s shirt, you’ll probably have to buy cotton batting rather than a pillow form, since you’re not likely to find a form small enough.
Step 2: Cut out two equal size squares, one from the front and one from the back of the t-shirt. These squares need to be at least one inch larger on each side than you want your finished pillow to be. If you’re using a pillow form, measure it from seam to seam and cut your square an inch on each side longer than that.
Step 3: Lay the t-shirt squares on top of each other, wrong sides together. Line up the edges and sew the square closed along three sides, a little less than one inch in from the edge.
Step 4: Sew a little more than half of the fourth side closed. Tie your thread off. Reach into the t-shirt squares, grab the opposite corner and turn the pillow case right side out.
Step 5: If you’re using a pillow form, fold it in half to stuff it into the pillow case. Once it’s inside, reach in and reshape the form to fill the case. If you’re using cotton batting, stuff in enough to fill the pillow case.
Step 6: Fold both edges of the open section of t-shirts into the pillow so that the seam is even with the section you already sewed. Close up the final section of seam by hand using an overhand loop stitch, which means you always poke the needle through from the same side of the fabric, looping the thread over the seam. Tie off your thread and tuck the tail into the pillow.
