How to Make Changes to Your Class Schedule?

Many college students need to add or drop a class at some point. In fact, it is common for students to make schedule changes after the first day of school. Fortunately, it isnt very difficult to add or drop a college class. By completing four simple steps, you can usually complete the schedule change process in a timely manner.

Make a List of Your Schedule Changes

Take time to write down the class(es) that you want to add/drop from your schedule. If you plan to add new classes to your schedule, make sure that these classes do not interfere with your other responsibilities (e.g. work, family obligations, and other important commitments). If you have a difficult time finding classes to accommodate your schedule, consider enrolling in online classes.

Meet With Your Academic Counselor

It is important to discuss all schedule changes with your academic counselor or advisor before you actually drop or add any classes. Your counselor can confirm whether or not your schedule changes are appropriate and necessary. Keep in mind that dropping classes can affect your ability to receive financial aid in the future. In addition, dropping classes can also affect your anticipated graduation date (because not all classes are offered every semester/term). Lastly, when you drop a class past a certain date in a given semester, that withdrawal will show on your college transcript. Having too many withdrawals on your transcript can make a negative impression when you apply for jobs, internships, scholarships, graduate programs, etc.

Complete the Required Paperwork

In order to make changes to your class schedule, you will need to complete an official Add/Drop form (Schedule Change form) indicating the desired changes. You must provide certain details on the form, including your full name, Social Security number (or student i.d. number), a description of the classes that you are adding/dropping, the reason for the changes, and your signature. Please note that your counselor or advisor may be required to sign the form, too.

Submit the Form to the Appropriate Department

Once you completely fill out the Add/Drop form, you must immediately submit the form to your schools Admission and Records office (Registrars office) for processing. Be sure to keep a copy of the form in a safe place. The Registrars office will let you know how long it will take for them to process the changes in their system. Dont forget to follow up with the Registrars office to ensure that your changes were made in a timely manner.
