Inform Your Instructor about Your Absence

Contact your instructor as soon as possible to inform him or her that you will be absent from class. Be sure to let your instructor know the specific reason for your absence. Do not be afraid to speak to your instructor about your situation. It is better to notify the instructor in advance rather than waiting until you return to class.

Gather the Appropriate Documentation

Your instructor may want to see proof of why you missed class (especially since you missed an exam). So, it is definitely a good idea to supply your instructor with the proper paperwork to support your absence. For instance, if you were absent due to illness, be prepared to show your instructor a note from your doctor. Likewise, if you missed class due to a death in your family, be prepared to give your instructor a copy of the family member’s obituary or funeral program.

Reschedule the Exam

It is up to the instructor whether or not you can make-up an exam. Your instructor may allow you to take the missed exam during class, immediately after class, or at another convenient time. So, make sure that you’re ready to take the exam as soon as you return to school. And don’t forget to take the appropriate documentation with you to give your instructor. In addition, don’t forget to take supplies with you that you might need for the exam, such as paper, pens, pencils, scantron forms, a calculator, etc.
