1. A high school diploma, or such an equivalent, will be the first requirement you must meet before you are able to become a security guard. Prior to signing up for any kind of program, you should ensure that you fully meet any of the prerequisites, educational or otherwise.

This is not really a requirement for anybody who is looking to hire a security guard, though by having “official” training as a security guard will definitely make you stand out over everybody else applying for the job, giving you the edge. However, some states, such as New York, consider it to be mandatory practice that a potential security guard first undergo certified training.
3. Undergoing training for security guards will involve more than just learning about the different subjects of criminal justice, but it will also require that you hone your clerical skills, in order to be better at public relations and writing reports.
4. You should also consider obtaining a license for a weapon. Those who are looking to become armed guards are not the only ones who will benefit from training for armed security guards; those who have completed training for security guards are still required to have an appropriate weapons license as per their state.
5. An employer will probably prefer it if you can run after a thief should the occasion arise, so it is best to get into shape. Admission for security guard training, however, does not have any prerequisites regarding fitness.
