It was not long ago when one could qualify with a high school diploma to become a fire fighter. Nowadays, due to the competitive nature of the job, most fire departments require at least two years of college credits.

Even before you consider applying for fire fighter training, you should meet the following minimum requirements:

1. Be at least 18 years old. Many fire departments would prefer you to be 21 years,

2. Be physically fit,

3. Have a clean criminal record,

4. Have a high school diploma. Though more fire departments now require a college education or specialized training

After the initial application, you are invited for more tests. In order to qualify to enter a fire-fighting program, you will be required to test at least three exams: An aptitude test, a written test and a physical ability test.

Different fire departments will have different written tests. Their goal however, is the same. As a fire fighter, you will be required to be observant and have a good memory. They test your ability to read comprehension, spatial awareness, mechanical reason, logic, memory and observation.

Part of your duties as a fire fighter include, being placed in dangerous situations. You do not want a fire fighter who is agitated and cannot handle pressure. Psychological tests ensure that you are mentally fit to perform your job.

Physical tests are probably the most important of the three processes. Fire fighting is a physically demanding occupation. It is important for the fire fighting training candidate to be healthy and strong. The physical tests will vary from one academy to another. However, do not be surprised if you are asked to:

1. Carry equipment – you may be asked to drag a hose reel for 25 meters, then jog back 25 meters,

2. Assemble Equipment – To test your dexterity, you may be asked to assemble and disassemble an item using a color coded diagram,

3. Clear an enclosed space,

4. Ladder lift, etc

Fire fighting departments pride themselves as being the best. They place great emphasis on the quality of candidates they accept in their fire fighter training programs. However, with a little preparation, you too can qualify.

Why Becoming A Fire Fighter Could Be A Great Choice For Your Future?

When people are deciding what they want to do in their lives, often they try to find a career that will not only give them professional satisfaction, but in addition give them moral satisfaction. There are very few jobs out there that will manage to do this, but without a doubt, a fire fighter is one of those jobs. Not only are you tested emotionally and physically as a fire fighter, but you are also giving a job that is as ever-changing as you can imagine. You will be tested on a daily basis and become a part of a unit of fire fighters that will all have one another’s backs. There really is not a better profession out there if these are the qualities that you are looking for. Another great benefit to becoming a fire fighter is the fact that you can complete fire fighter training in less than three years. You will get the best training provided and you will be completely prepared to start interviewing as soon as you are finished. It isn’t like some degrees where you spend more time on general education credits than actual training. Instead, fire fighter training will train you explicitly for what will be expected on the job. That is important because if you aren’t trained for the actual job, you might get there and find out that it isn’t a good fit for you. While you are in training, you will know whether or not becoming a fire fighter will be a good fit for you in your life. When you get your first job as a fire fighter, you will find that you will have some of the best benefits of any job that you could imagine. In addition, most fire fighters are protected by the union which means you will also have job security when you stay with one fire station for a while. These are two very important elements to a job right now, especially with the economy being what it is. Make sure you don’t waste too much time in a dead end job that does not bring you happiness or satisfaction. Life is just too short.
