How to Reface Cabinets?

In many instances a cabinet can be made to look like new by changing the doors, drawer faces and face frames. This is known as refacing, and it will accomplish much the same as a complete replacement for less than half the cost. The refacing can be done to a single cabinet, such as a built-in bookcase or a bathroom vanity, or it can be done to the upper and lower kitchen cabinets.

The first step in the process is to empty the cabinet shelves and remove the drawers and any cabinet doors. Be sure to save the drawers and doors as templates for the new pieces. The next step is to carefully remove the face frames in such a way as to keep these pieces intact. Again, these can be used a templates for the new face frames. The best way to remove face frames is to work a wood chisel into the seam between the frame and the cabinet until the glue bead is separated. The pieces can then be pulled away and numbered for reference.

The type of wood used for the refacing will depend on the desired finish of the new installation. Pine and Douglas fir make an ideal wood for painted finishes, and Oak or Birch are ideal for a stained finish. With either type of wood it is best to use solid stock for the face frames, and plywood veneer for the doors and drawer faces.

Where recessed doors are being replaced it is best to use stolid stock as the door frame, and plywood veneer as the recessed panels. Drawer faces can be made from solid stock or plywood veneer, and these can be trimmed with thin pieces of stock to give the appearance of solid wood. Flush doors and drawer faces can be made from plywood veneer, and trimmed in the same way for a solid wood appearance.

If the refacing suggests changing out the vanity or kitchen countertops, it’s a good idea to remove the tops before the refacing gets started. Once the refacing is complete, the new frames, doors and drawers can be sealed and painted, or stained and finished prior to setting the new tops. Be sure to replace any drawer guides that do not work properly. Once the cabinets have been painted or stained, the new cabinet hardware can be installed to complete the project.
