1. Take the chair apart. You’ll likely have to take some of the chair apart to be able to removed the upholstered seat from the rest of the chair. Just keep any screws or bolts that you remove from the chair.

2. Remove the current upholstery. You’ll likely need a hammer or a flat head screwdriver to remove all of the staples or nails that have been holding the old upholstery on the chair. Once you’ve removed all the hardware, you can dispose of the old material that covered the chair.

3. Choose your new fabric. When you shop for a fabric to cover your dining chairs with, you need to remember the rest of the chair. If the chair is made of light wood, you’ll probably use a different material than you would if the chair was made of black metal. You also need to choose a fabric that is thick enough to withstand everyday wear and tear from people sitting and climbing on chairs.

4. Staple the fabric to the chairs and reassemble them. Once you’ve chosen your fabric, you’ll want to purchase or borrow a staple gun to attach the fabric to the seat. Start on one side of the seat so that you can make sure the fabric is tight. Pull the fabric as tight as you can and staple it to the seat. Be sure not to cover any holes where hardware needs to go to put the chair back together. When you are finished, reassemble the chair.
