With all of this talk about transforming the business world into one giant paperless office, we might be tempted to think that pens, pencils, and markers will soon become obsolete. If we conduct all of our communication via the computer, telephone, and other virtual methods, paper and writing utensils will no longer be required. However, though the working world may develop into something of a virtual giant, neither pens nor pencils nor markers will ever disappear. Think of your planner or to-do list. Is there not some tremendous feeling of victory when you have accomplished a task and you cross it out with a pen? Or a dark red marker? Or even a lime green highlighter? Doing such a thing on a computer interface does not have the same effect. Think of your time spent on the phone. Many of us like to scribble or doodle while we’re talking to a customer representative or a friend. Sometimes, it is next to impossible to get to the computer should we need to take a message. The phone, whether we care to admit it or not, requires the use of a writing utensil. Think of children in the classroom. Is it possible to learn everything via the computer? Would it even be ethical to teach our children how to read and type, but not how to write? Or draw? Or communicate and express themselves through pen on a page? Electronics have opened up an entirely new world to our education system, but they should not remove other age-old methods, including the use of the pen, pencil, and marker. Think of teachers. The music teacher needs a pencil to write on the classical score. The English teacher needs to highlight and correct in red pen and does not receive the same satisfaction any other way. The math teacher wants to write his problems on the board with a dry-erase marker. Teaching, and therefore learning, does not work without writing utensils. Though many of our methods are advancing in technology, the writing utensil-whether it be pen, pencil, marker, or something else-will never lose it’s popularity. Writing utensils will forever be an integral part of society.
