When a loved one has to be admitted to a residential treatment facility, a place where mentally ill or troubled patients live, weather for a short period of time or permanently, it is never an easy process. There is the guilt associated with wondering if you are doing the right thing for your loved one combined with the lost feeling of not knowing where to turn or what to ask.

When admitting a loved one to a residential treatment facility, it is important to tour the facility at all times of day, sometimes unannounced. This way, you will get the best feel for what the facility is like and how they treat their residents. You want to pay attention to the way residents are talked to and dealt with. It may also prove useful to ensure that for the most part, the residents (and staff) look hygienic and that the residents do not look bruised or heavily sedated.

You also want to meet with the psychiatrist, psychologist and case worker that will be dealing with your loved one. You want to ensure that their theories and techniques are in the best interest of the person you are admitting to the residential treatment facility. Essentially, you want to be sure that the doctors and staff will be dealing with the issues at hand, not making them worse with punishment techniques or ignoring them with sedation or bribery techniques.

Inquire about a standard day for a resident of the facility. Ask several different people at different times and make sure that the answers sounds pretty standard. It is not uncommon for staff to try and make a place sound better than it is. Inquire about daily activities and the different types of therapy your loved one will be attending. Inquire about the food being served, maybe even go to the cafeteria and try some of it for yourself.

Always remember, as harrowing as this situation may be for you, your loved one’s future and mental well being is on the line. If you know that the right thing for them is to be in a residential treatment facility, you have made the most difficult part of the decision. Finding the right facility is just a matter of knowing what to look for.

Is there a residential treatment center that will accept patients with binge eating disorder?

Yes, there are some inpatient and residential treatment centers that include people with binge eating disorder in their programs. The fact that a person has an eating disorder doesn't necessarily guarantee the medical staff will consider residential care the best form of treatment for that individual, or that a bed will be available at any given time. See Related Links for residential treatment centers for binge eating disorder.* *Note that the list does not imply endorsement or quality assurance of any facility. The links provided are samples, not a comprehensive list of all residential treatment providers. For more information, see the ED Database.
