How to Purchase the Right Outdoor Canopies for Your Needs

Outdoor canopies provide a level of shelter from sun, wind, and rain. Often purchased in anticipation of an outdoor gathering or event, it is important to select a canopy that will fulfill the individual needs of the consumer.

Choose the right size

Most basic outdoor canopies are sold as 10’x10’ units. A canopy of this size will cover an area slightly larger than a traditional picnic table, and is suitable if the consumer only needs to provide shelter to a group of six or less. Canopies needed to provide cover to automobiles or watercraft should be 12’x20’ or 18’x20’, depending on the dimensions of the vehicle in question. For large parties or events, canopies with measurements of 20’x30’ or larger should be sought. Canopies of this size can cover seating of up to 80 people, and canopies measuring 20’x40’ can cover seating for up to 100 people.

Select the appropriate material strength

Canopies can be purchased with descriptions such as standard, all-purpose, or heavy duty. Such descriptions may be of little help when selecting appropriate outdoor canopies, as different manufacturers describe their products differently. Canopies can be made of vinyl, polyethylene, canvas, or sheet metal. Canopy frames are usually made from galvanized steel unless otherwise specified. For applications where the elements may be harsh and appearance is not necessarily a concern, a metal or polyethylene canopy is probably suitable. For home or party usage, or when climate will not present a problem, light vinyl or canvas can be selected.

Decide how much coverage is desired

Although all outdoor canopies provide overhead coverage, not all provide wall-like protection. Some canopies come complete with shade or insect screens; others can attach to such screens, but the screens must be purchased separately. If the consumer wishes to have such protection, he or she should purchase a canopy that comes with screens or attachments for aftermarket screens.

Consider price

Although outdoor canopies are unlikely to be found at closeout stores, it is always wise to shop around for the best price. Many outdoor recreation and sporting good stores offer to beat competitors’ prices, and if the consumer shops for outdoor canopies at the end of the season, he or she may be able to get the product at a considerable discount.
