Leather apparel is very often thought of as a luxury item. So leather garments deserve to be cared for properly. If you take good care of your leather garments, you will not only get years of service from them, but they will always look their best.

1. When storing leather in your closet, never encase it in plastic. Mildew and other types of bacteria can build up on your leather garments, whether they are jackets or skirts. Store your leather items in a cool, dry place, and do not hang them near any heat receptacle. If you must store your leather garment in some sort of protective bag, make sure that it is cloth, not plastic. You want your garment to be able to breathe.

2. Remove any light stains from leather garments with a damp cloth. Do not allow stains to set in. If you do have any stubborn stains on your leather items, have a professional cleaner remove them.

3. Leather can use occasional conditioning to keep it looking supple and avoid drying out of its natural oils. If you want to condition your leather, only use a product that is specifically made for that purpose and follow the directions that come with the product. And conditioner should never go directly on the leather, it goes on a cloth which is then used on your leather item. If you want to apply more than one coat on your leather apparel, allow the first coat to dry thoroughly for at least 30 minutes before reapplying.

4. If you get caught in the rain wearing one of your leather garments, allow the garment to air dry. Do not expose it to heat, as this will crack and dry out your leather and ruin it.

5. Hang your leather garments on a strong hanger that will allow them to retain their shape.

6. When your leather garments need a professional cleaning, take them to a reputable cleaner that you trust.

Leather apparel is attractive and costly. If you take the proper care of your leather items, you will have them to enjoy for years, and they will always look like new.
