Silk ties make classy additions to any man’s wardrobe, but in order to wear a silk tie, one must know how to tie it properly. There are many different ways to tie a tie, but it’s hard to go wrong with a basic Windsor knot, which is a triangular tie knot that helps create an aura of professionalism in whoever displays it.
The first step in the process is to choose a tie. Once you have found something fitting for the occasion, stand in front of the mirror so that you will be able to watch yourself work. You’ll want to begin by looping the tie around your neck in such a way that the wider end of your tie will be on the right. Make sure that it hangs down about a foot lower than the narrow end, which will be on your left.
After crossing the wide end over top of the narrow end, bring the wide end up so that it comes through the loop between the tie and the collar and then bring it back down. At this point, you’ll need to tuck the wide end behind the narrow part and yank it to the right. Then bring it back through the loop and pull it to the right once again.
At this point, the wide end will be inside out, and you will need to bring it across once more, pulling it toward the left before bringing it up through the loop once more and then down through the knot in the front. Once that is done, all that is left for you to do is to tighten the knot and straighten it so that the tie looks orderly.
Tying a tie can seem like an intimidating process at first, but with a bit of practice, you should be able to master it with little trouble. Ideally, you’ll have that knot put together in under two minutes, and then you can work on other, more complicated knots such as the Half Windsor, the Pratt and the Four in Hand. Happy tying!
