In our fast-paced lives, stress is a common problem that affects many people, young and old alike. Many people, out of a desire to avoid taking prescribed medications, are turning towards natropathy (treating illness with natural methods) to treat their stress symptoms. Herbs have been used for centuries to treat various ailments, and it is knowledge that we are only just starting to regain. There are many herbs said to relive stress, so how do you choose the right ones?
-Step 1: List your symptoms
List all the symptoms that you are having right now, even those that you don’t think are associated with the stress. You could list things like insomnia, headaches, acid reflux – anything that is bothering you.
-Step 2: Choose the worst symptoms
Choose the symptoms that are bothering you the most, we will treat them individually. Hopefully as you treat the worse symptoms, the others will go as well.
-Step 3: Choose your herbs
Choose the herbs to relieve depression and stress. Start with something that will treat the overall problem: St John’s Wort is a good place to start. To treat digestive problems associated with stress, try chamomile or peppermint tea. Use valerian to help you sleep and feverfew for headaches.
-Step 4: Decide how to take the herbs
Will you take them as a supplement in a capsule, or as a tea, or make a tincture by boiling them down and taking a few drops a day? Each way has its own benefits, but if you dislike the flavor of the herbs, as many can be bitter, then choose a way that doesn’t involve actually tasting them – like capsules.
-Step 5: Decide on dose
Decide what dose to take. Some herbs have to be limited. Check with a herbalist to be sure, and vary the doses in the mixture until you find the right combination for optimum stress relief. Also, remember to check with your doctor before actually taking any herbs.
Herbs cannot change the stressful events in your life, but they can help you deal with them. So, you can live without stress and deal with problems calmly, and rationally, they can help you deal with times of depression with a level head, but are no substitute for seeing the doctor.
