Both hybrid cars and electric cars are an improvement over gasoline powered cars. Hybrids have a gas powered engine and an electric motor. This allows for greater mileage and reduced, but not completely negated, emissions. Electric cars are powered solely by electricity. They produce no tailpipe emissions whatsoever, but they cannot go very long distances without needing to be recharged. Electric cars cannot be topped up at gas stations and take a few hours to fully recharge.
The debate continues between hybrid vs gas cars. Fuel economy and eco-friendliness of a hybrid is higher except for small four cylinder cars. Gas savings are offset by the higher sticker price of a hybrid. Depending on driving habits, it may take several years to recoup the difference in purchase price. Hybrids may qualify for tax credits and insurance discounts that reduce this difference and they have higher resale values.
Hybrid cars, at this moment, will be less expensive in the long run because they do not fully rely on electricity (which is becoming more and more expensive through power/electricity companies). However, electric cars are more friendly to the enviroment.
A plug-in hybrid is a type of hybrid vehicle which uses rechargeable batteries or other energy storage devices as its power source. These hybrids can be restored to full charged by connecting to an external electrical power source similar to a wall socket. While the plug-in hybrid vehicle runs mostly on electrical power, it is estimated that the cost of fuel (electrical vs gasoline) costs the consumer less than 25% as much.
This depends on what kind of driving you plan to do. If you mostly stay close to home and do little freeway driving an electric model may be right for you. If you have a long commute or plan on vacationing in your car, a hybrid would be your best choice.
