Identifying Appendicitis Symptoms

Appendicitis is caused by an infection or blockage in the appendix. It is unknown what causes the infection, but it seems to most commonly affect young people between 10 and 30 years old. Sometimes appendicitis is not easy to diagnose, so it’s important to see a doctor right away if you experience the symptoms.

The most common symptom of appendicitis is belly pain. The pain may feel like indigestion or gas, or it may feel more severe. The pain usually starts out in the belly button area and moves right. Sometimes the pain can be in other parts of your belly or even in your back or side. The pain may increase as you move or cough. Some other symptoms include constipation, fever and nausea.

Gauge the degree of the belly pain. If it seems moderate, you may want to wait and see if the pain goes away. If it doesn’t after four hours, see a doctor. If you experience intolerable belly pain, see a doctor right away. It is recommended that you not eat or drink anything for a while, in case surgery is needed. A doctor will usually not operate right away, however. He will first observe the symptoms and perform blood and urine tests before making a diagnosis and recommendation for surgery. Plus, some diseases mimic the symptoms of appendicitis, so doctors want to ensure appendicitis is the cause of the symptoms before performing unnecessary surgery.

If your doctor diagnoses you with appendicitis, the only treatment is surgery to remove the appendix. The goal is to remove it before it bursts and spreads infection to the stomach and surrounding organs. Even if the doctor is unsure if you have appendicitis, he may remove your appendix anyway to reduce the possible risk of infection. If your appendix does burst, you will need to stay in the hospital to ensure there is no sign of infection. If infection is present, you will be given IV fluids and antibiotics.

Note that appendicitis cannot be treated at home. If you experience these symptoms, the best course of action is to see a doctor right away.

Can appendicitis correct itself or is surgery always required?

While rare or uncommon, yes, there have been cases of chronic or recurrent appendicitis that didn't require surgery. However, due to the fact that those two types of appendicitis are uncommon and appendicitis can be fatal if left unchecked, I'd definitely advice one who has any of the symptoms associated with appendicitis or is concerned they may have appendicitis, to see their health care provider as soon as possible.
