There are usually only a few reasons a dog will show hair loss in a certain spot.

1) It has been chewing in that spot to alleviate itching from a bug bite.

2) If on/near a joint, the dog has been chewing the fur in an attempt to alleviate pain from possible Arthritis (if an older dog).

3) It's immune system is compromised and that area is developing the mange and should be seen ASAP by a veterinarian.
