Is Your Child Cell Phone Ready?
We are Generation C. We live in a technological society. There are families all around that allow their children to use cellular phones. Is your child ready for one?
There are many things to consider when making this decision. Responsibility is one of them. Ask yourself these questions to see if your child is responsible enough for a cellular phone.
Does my child have a job?
If they do, they definitely need a cellular phone. For safety reasons alone it is best your child has a cell phone. Many people no longer have landlines because we live in such a fast-paced society, so it is safer that your child carries a cell phone. In addition, if your child babysits or has any job for that matter, it is best that they pay a portion of the bill. This will teach them responsibility at a young age.
Is my child involved with after school activities?
If the answer to this question is yes, then a cell phone is a must have. Parents need to know where their children are at all times. Cell phones allow for this communication. If your child is going to be at school late, you do not ever want to have to worry about keeping in touch with them.
Will my child be careful with the phone?
If your child is responsible with delicate things such as piggy banks and DVD movies, then they may be ready for a cell phone. Many children just toss things into their backpacks and they end up broken. If your child is usually good about taking care of their personal belongings, then a cell phone may be a good choice for them.
Will my child use the cell phone appropriately?
Will your child download inappropriate content to their phones? If you know your child would do this, refrain from the cell phone. You could also block texting, which may be a good option depending on your child.
What are your parental instincts?
Just because we live in a society where many children are using cell phones, does not mean your child has to be one of them. If you feel that your child is not ready, do not make the purchase. You know your child the best, so you should always trust how you feel about situations to ensure you are making the best decisions for you and your family.
