Islip, NY is a town on Long Island that became well known when, after several years, it realized its landfill had become full. Arrangements were made to slip the trash to another location by barge. However, a short time after the barge left port loaded with garbage, a rumor began that there were several bags of hospital garbage on the barge, which was considered to have contaminated the entire load.
The barge was refused docking at many locations and finally was granted a federal pass to dock in New Jersey. After a long court battle, the ruling was that the garbage would be incinerated in Brooklyn and the ashes shipped back to Islip and added to their landfill there. Since this incident, there has been no further attempts at shipping garbage via barge.
Islip, NY is home to the Long Island MacArthur Airport and the New York Air Route Traffic Control Center. Tourism has made Islip, NY grow into the town that it is today.
