The Batman comics and movies have made The Joker, also known as "The Clown Prince of Crime" one of the best known fictional villains. Since he is both fun and scary, he is a popular subject for Halloween or for a costume party.

Although The Joker has appeared with slight differences in comics, films and television, in nearly all his incarnations the Joker has appeared in a certain basic attire. That clownish yet elegant style requires a purple jacket with tails with matching purple pants and a green shirt and tie. Unless you already have a lot of purple in your wardrobe, you may have to buy or dye specific items. His face is white with red lips and his hair is green, so dye your hair green or buy yourself a green wig. Also apply heavy white pancake make-up all over your face and neck and use bright red lipstick. The Joker was a master of little tricks and sight gags. Good joke props can be had at any magic or hobby shop, which you can then whip out to amuse people at appropriate times.

Although The Joker costume is pretty simple overall, some people like to model their Joker costume after specific performances, such as the one by Jack Nicholson in "Batman" or Heath Ledger in "The Dark Knight." Nicholson's Joker costume requires an orange shirt instead of green. He also wore a purple fedora hat and twirled a black walking cane. Heath Ledger interpreted the Joker in a more gritty, punkish style, thereby requiring slightly different make-up. The make-up on Ledger's Joker was applied in a messy and haphazard manner, with the red lipstick smeared across his mouth. In addition he had dark circles under his eyes. With Ledger The Joker's green hair was stringy and hung in his face. The biggest difference is one you will have to convey in your style and mannerisms, which were darker and more eccentric than the traditional Joker.
