Surveyors measure and document land, air and water boundaries. They may work for individuals, corporations or small businesses, or for government agencies. Surveyors typically work with civil engineers, architects or planners as part of a team designing or documenting an area or development plans. In short, surveyors determine boundaries. The information surveyors provide helps determine where and if buildings may be built in a particular location, where roads may be constructed, and determines property lines for purposes of settling disputes in court. Data discovered by surveyors taking careful measurements is used in creating maps and zoning regulations. Surveyors work outdoors in all kinds of terrain and weather conditions, but they also spend a fair amount of time in documenting their measurements, charting areas, and engaging in legal paperwork and reports.

You need to be mobile, have advanced mathematics skills, and be very precise and analytic in order to be a successful surveyor, with good visual acuity, communication skills (written and verbal) and be comfortable working as part of a team. Surveyors need to be able to research previous surveys, and be adept at using analog, traditional survey equipment as well as adept at using more modern digital GPS and computer systems for measurement, record-keeping, and map-and-plot-making.

Surveyors have a four year college B.A. or B.S. degree, and need to be licensed in order certify documents. Typical degrees held by surveyors include surveying, mapping or geomatics. Your course work would include courses in calculus, geographic information systems (GIS) and cartography. In some states in addition to a license you must have a degree from an accredited program approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Even those states that do not require an accredited degree require you to pass the Fundamentals of Surveying exam given by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). Certifying organizations include the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS).
