The “For Dummies” series of books are a highly popular and successful series of books that teach people of all skill levels how to do thousands of things. Started in the early 80’s with a book about the DOS computer system and language, they are continuing that tradition with a broad ranging series of books about the Linux operating system called “Linux For Dummies”.

While the title of the “For Dummies” series may at first put off a person not familiar with the series, one soon finds out that the series of books are extremely helpful and somewhat lighthearted. This is especially helpful with Linux education as so many of the sources available treat the student as if they already have extensive computer experience and knowledge. For those who don’t and are looking to learn more about Linux, the “Linux For Dummies” series is a great starting point.

However, it is not only the novice or inexperienced computer user who can benefit from this series. The “Linux For Dummies” series also includes larger reference guides that are almost 700 pages in length. There are quick reference guides, programming guides and guides for using Linux with smart homes. There are numerous guides dedicated to particular distributions or packages of Linux that delve into great detail. For the user who is familiar with Linux or even has a lot of Linux experience, the “Linux For Dummies” series still has a lot of information they could find useful.

With all this in mind, one thing needs to be mentioned. When looking for and buying the book one needs to make sure of two things. The first thing is that the edition they are considering buying is the latest edition. Things change and new editions are published, so check the publisher’s website to make sure what is being purchased is up to date. The second thing to make sure of is that any CDs or DVDs are included if they should be. Some of the versions of the books come with Linux distributions included. If one is paying for it, it should be included.

Whether novice or seasoned pro, the “Linux For Dummies” series has something for almost everyone interested in the world of Linux.
