Little Rock is situated in the middle of Arkansas. The city is named for a rock formation that lies along the river. The formation was used as a primitive road (river) sign during travels up and down the waterway. The rock is still viewable along the shoreline. Native Americans inhabited the area for hundreds of centuries and evidence of their existence is seen at the Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park. The squarely shaped hills are believed to have been used for ceremonial and political purposes.

A French explorer by the name of Jean-Baptiste Bernard de la Happe came to the region in 1722 and built a trading post. Other trappers and traders followed. The city grew and flourished but during the Civil War was lost for a period to the Union Army. Little Rock, AR. is filled with history from the era. The Villa Marre was used as the fictitious location of Ms. Sugarbaker on the popular TV show "Designing Women".

The Historic Arkansas Museum is an expansive building that houses the art and artifacts of the state. Four homes built prior to the Civil War are also on display. The Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum is home to the USS Razorback. This Navy submarine served from 1944 to 1970 and came home to Little Rock, AR. rather than being converted to scrap metal. The museum also has the USS Hoya, a Naval harbor tug and a memorial to the USS Snook, which was lost at sea.
