The city of Macau in southern China has a long history as a Portuguese colony. Macau resides on the west side of the Pearl River Delta, bordering the Chinese province of Guangdong, near the former British colony of Hong Kong on the South China Sea. Macau returned to Chinese control in December of 1999 and remains an autonomous region of China. The economy of Macau is dependent on gambling and tourism, with some minor manufacturing, while the union of Portuguese catholic and Chinese buddhist holidays are equally celebrated on Macau.

Public transportation is provided by transit buses and taxis. Buses connect the Macau peninsula with Taipa, Cotai, and Coloane islands. The Macau International Airport sits on the eastern end of Taipa island. There are ferry services to Hong Kong from the Outer Harbor Ferry Terminal, and to mainland Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Shekou from the Yuet Tung Ferry Terminal on the Inner Harbor.
