Going on a diet. Those words inspire some and fill others with dread. For some reason for a majority of people it also creates a mental block. Most of us tend to think that good food choices that we make begin and end at the grocery store and for most of us that is simply not true.

The days when most of the meals we consume are in the home are simply gone. We eat on the go. Whether it is stilling down to a business meeting with your key clients or running through the drive-thru on your way to soccer practice eating out just happens, and we need to learn to manage it well or any attempt at weight loss will be doomed to mediocrity at best.

I know what you're thinking. You are betting that I am trying to banish you to the salad section of the menu in order to stay fit. Have no fear, I know that you are not a bunny, and that there will be times that you will want to eat real food, and maybe even meats. So here are some tips for getting to eat out without spending a lot of time with the salad bar.

  • Find out how your food are prepared. Baked, broiled, and steamed are your friends. You want to skip fried and anything oil poached.
  • Choose vegetable sides, but not the potatoes since restaurant portions are usually dripping in butter and much larger than you would serve at home. It is better to end up with too many green beans instead of too many carbs.
  • Get your sauces, dressings, butters and other optional liquids on the side. This way you have control over how much you put on your food. Those dressings can account for a fair portion of your calories in a meal.

Remember do not be embarrassed to special order your food at a restaurant. You are paying good money and you deserve to get your food your way. Never let a waiter who is checked out today or a chef who does not want to ruin his 'masterpiece' to dissuade you. If a place gives you a hard time then do the talking with your wallet and do not eat there again.
