Marine Engineering is usually described as the application of the principles of physics to the design and construction of things that float. Products ranging in size from ten foot long surfboards to aircraft carriers that displace a hundred thousand tons usually involve a marine engineer at some point in the design and production cycle. Marine engineers often work with complex design packages to both model the structure of a water-going vessel and ascertain the effects different structures are likely to have on the vessel's performance and safety. Marine engineers generally require a formal four year education in an accredited engineering program. The coursework taken will usually culminate in earning a degree in civil or mechanical engineering, although chemical engineers and electrical engineers can provide important expertise when it comes to the design of internal ship components. Generally two years of advanced calculus and statistics in conjunction with a year of physics and a year of chemistry are the basic prerequisites for a marine engineering education and the latter two years of a marine engineer's program will be filled with courses in engineering fundamentals and engineering design. Many programs encourage their students to pursue professional licensure in engineering and prepare them to take the fundamentals of engineering exam soon after graduation. After four year of professional work in the field a marine engineer can sit the professional engineering examination and be licensed to offer services to the public.

Marine engineers develop a wide variety of skills that can be applied to numerous projects involving marine affairs. Although the traditional pathway of a marine engineer is the design of boats, ships, or submarines for a major construction client, emerging opportunities in the design of water resistant structures and man-made waterways seek the skill set developed by marine engineers. Some marine engineers move into related engineering disciplines or pursue graduate level work in engineering, science, medicine, or law. Marine engineers can be particularly suited to work in oceanography or climate studies because the principles of fluid flow, hydraulics, and water based systems underlay many aspects of weather and the environment.
