The Master at Arms (MA) is a rating designation for active duty and reservist members of the United States Navy who specialize in law enforcement, security and weapons handling. Each and every military base or structure has a designated Military Police Department or Security Department. The Master at Arms specialists are the Navy's police officers and they are the ones that usually carry out police and security duties onboard ship and shore installations.

When processing into the Navy, service members are instructed to choose a rating designation for the specific job that they will be doing while enlisted. For those that desire a career in law enforcement or security, the Navy's Master at Arms program is an excellent start. The Navy outsources their recruits after basic training to be instructed and trained by civilian police officers for approximately nine weeks. This rigorous military police academy trains the entrants on all civilian and military law, weapon handling and shooting, self defense tactics, use of force and simulated police scenario training.

Once police academy is successfully completed, the Master at Arms will be shipped off to their respective commands. A typical Naval shore installation will have a Police Department that houses at least thirty patrolmen on three different rotating shifts. Most of the patrolmen are of the Master at Arms rating; however there are a few out of rate personnel that are able to fill a Security billet due to the Navy's specialized 9545 Security training. The 9545 trainees must complete the same law enforcement academy that the Master at Arms have completed.

Navy police officers are overall responsible for the safety and security of all on-base personnel, both military and civilian. Police officers conduct routine traffic stops for those that violate the Navy's traffic policy on base. Police officers monitor and rove the base and any other government property in the area. The patrolmen are also responsible for evening colors- which means they must ceremoniously pull the base flag down when the sun sets.

The Navy patrolmen must be well versed on all Navy instruction regarding base policy; however they must also be cognizant of the surrounding state and county laws that are still applicable on base. The Navy police officer is held to a higher standard of professionalism and expected to act with integrity at all times.
