Medical Scientists study human diseases and how they work, in order to improve the quality of human lives. As a Medical Scientist one will research viruses and bacteria that cause certain medical conditions. Medical Scientists continue to make advancements in the health field with their studies of living organisms and cells. Their purpose in researching diseases is to search for treatment and cures.

A Medical Scientist must be very experienced in Biology. They study human cells to make advancements and try to find cures for diseases such as cancer and AIDS. Medical Scientists are constantly searching for a breakthrough cure for these terrible illnesses. For example, Medical Scientists have created new medications that help stop cancer cells from multiplying and slow down cancer cell production. If the Medical Scientist is also a doctor, they will conduct clinical trials on their patients to determine which medications work. If the Medical Scientist is not a physician, they work closely together with physicians to conduct these trials. Currently there are many Medical Scientists that continue to try to find the cure for HIV/ AIDS. There is no known cure at this time, however Medical Scientist have helped create medications that slow down the virus in a person’s body. In addition, the many childhood vaccinations that we have today were successfully created by Medical Scientists. Furthermore, they continue today to create new vaccinations, including one that is offered to young girls to prevent Cervical cancer.

A Medical Scientist may work in a hospital, laboratory, or office setting. They usually work regular 9 to 5 hours, unless they are in the process of conducting a clinical trial. This may require them to work longer hours, including nights and weekends. Although generally a Medical Scientists job is not hazardous, they may be required to work with substances that are toxic to their health. In these cases, proper safety training is required to ensure that the Medical Scientist is protected and to avoid contamination. Medical Scientists may travel to attend meetings regarding their advancements.

The minimum education that is required to be a Medical Scientist is a Ph.D. in Biological Science. Many Medical Scientists further their education by becoming a licensed physician in order to complete tasks that interact with a patient such as drawing blood and extracting tissue. A Medical Scientist makes on an average of $61,000 annually. This is a continuously growing profession that will help better the world and the people who live in it.
